Kids Against Animal Poaching, in partnership with Space for Giants, is having a Collaring Campaign to raise $50,000 to fit GPS collars on elephants.
The collaring of elephants is critical to better protect them from poachers. Poachers kill between 20,000 and 30,000 African elephants each year for their tusks and anti-poaching efforts, like collaring, are critical to elephant conservation.
This campaign will also help rangers guard the remaining elephants from poaching which is an essential step in rebuilding the population. Satellite collars are a tried-and-tested tool for wildlife monitoring and will give rangers a leg up on poachers, allowing them to identify and respond to threats in real-time through mobile devices.
Data collected through these collars also helps predict where the animals are moving to anticipate any dangers they may encounter. This includes alerting neighboring communities when the animals are heading towards their settlement to reduce human-elephant conflict, also a leading cause of elephant deaths.
We presently have an opportunity to help secure a future for Africa's largest remaining elephant population numbering some 130,000 individuals. Currently these elephants are concentrated in northern Botswana where they are being killed through poaching and conflict with local farmers. Neighboring Angola has agreed to provide a huge national park for these elephants to move into. Our goal is to collar these elephants and monitor their movements to help protect them. Already we know of at least one collared elephant that has made the 70km journey.
The cost to collar and track one elephant is $7250:
$3500 Collar
$650 2-year data plan
$2500 Helicopter per elephant (one elephant per hour of flying time)
$200 Vet time for deployment
$200 Drugs per elephant
$200 Vehicle support per collaring
Thank you in advance for doing what you can to help save these magnificent creatures.
